The Balkan Traditions Concept (BALTRACONT) serves as a curatorial framework that makes individual cultural traditions more legible, not less. Rather than presenting isolated national traditions, the Balkan concept offers a curatorial structure that reflects historical realities: overlapping influences, shared materials, and regional craftsmanship. This approach allows each tradition to be presented with greater clarity, depth and credibility, especially for an international audience.

 The concept presents a broad spectrum of Balkan traditions, including Greek, Albanian, North Macedonian, Bulgarian, Turkish, Romanian, Serbian, Bosniak, Montenegrin and Croatian traditions, alongside the cultural traditions of communities historically and culturally present across the Balkans, such as Aromanians (Vlachs), Roma, Rusyns and Slovaks.

Rooted in the cultural landscape of the Balkans, the concept is further enriched through curated guest sub-exhibitions highlighting border cultures, including Hungarian traditions, together with selected traditions from the host country, Austria.

Das Balkanische Traditionskonzept (BALTRACONT) dient als kuratorischer Rahmen, der einzelne kulturelle Traditionen nicht verwischt, sondern im Gegenteil klarer lesbar macht. Anstatt isolierte nationale Traditionen zu präsentieren, bietet das Balkanische Konzept eine kuratorische Struktur, die historischen Realitäten Rechnung trägt: sich überlagernde Einflüsse, gemeinsame Materialien und regional geprägte Handwerkstraditionen. Dieser Ansatz ermöglicht es, jede einzelne Tradition mit größerer Klarheit, Tiefe und Glaubwürdigkeit darzustellen – insbesondere für ein internationales Publikum.

Das Konzept präsentiert ein breites Spektrum balkanischer Traditionen, darunter griechische, albanische, nordmazedonische, bulgarische, türkische, rumänische, serbische, bosniakische, montenegrinische und kroatische Traditionen, ebenso wie die kulturellen Ausdrucksformen von Gemeinschaften, die historisch und kulturell im Balkanraum präsent sind, wie etwa Aromunen (Walachen), Roma, Russinen und Slowaken.

Verwurzelt in der kulturellen Landschaft des Balkans wird das Konzept zusätzlich durch kuratierte Gast-Subausstellungen bereichert, die Grenz- und Übergangskulturen in den Fokus stellen, darunter ungarische Traditionen, ergänzt durch ausgewählte Traditionen des Gastgeberlandes Österreich.

The exhibited objects are thoughtfully organized into several main categories, allowing visitors to explore both the diversity and shared roots of Balkan craftsmanship:

• Embroidery – A dedicated section featuring intricate embroidery techniques from across the Balkans, where Serbian, Greek, Bulgarian, Turkish, Albanian, Vlach, Roma, and other traditions meet, revealing stunning variations in motifs, colors, stitches, and symbolic meanings.
• Jewelry – A rich display of traditional and contemporary pieces worn and created by Balkan communities – from elaborate silver filigree necklaces and massive amber beads, to delicate gold earrings, coral bracelets, coin-adorned belts, and amulets that have protected generations.
